Your Heart is My Bullseye

July 20, 2016

When I got the email with the Songwriter’s Association of Canada’s Songwriting & Blogging Week #3 Challenge – to collaborate with another writer participating in the challenge – I immediately thought – Rebecca Lappa! We are both from Edmonton, we have shared the stage a number of times – here in Edmonton at various venues, and also in Kansas City in 2015 in the Alberta Room at the Folk Alliance International Conference.

I used to have a weekly podcast here in Edmonton about the arts, featuring local artists, talking about theatre, visual art, etc. So I have watched Rebecca blossom into this amazing writer and performer over the years. I believe the first time we performed together she was 12 and I was in my early twenties. I have always been totally impressed with her creativity, her boldness to go after her music dreams, her unique style and stories.

So as I said – when I read that this week’s challenge was to collaborate I went onto Facebook to write Rebecca a message to see if she’d be interested in working together and I already had a message in my inbox waiting for me, from Rebecca! What a fun coincidence and opportunity to actually collaborate beyond just playing shows together.

The second part of the challenge was to write a themed song about relationships. Rebecca and I mulled over a few themes, but settled on archery. We started brainstorming about bows, arrows, feathers and Robin Hood. Here is a rough recording of what we ended up with – the love story of Robin Hood and Maid Marian from Marian’s perspective.

Thanks Rebecca for being so fun and flexible! It was a pleasure to write with you and I sincerely hope we do it again sometime soon.

Lyrics:

Verse one

Too busy stealing from the rich and giving to the poor
Do you love me anymore?
Running off with your merry men
What about me, Maid Marian

Pre Chorus

I’ve got my bow, I’ve got my arrow
I’m coming for you

Chorus

I’m leaving my corset behind
Draw back and let it fly
I’ve got you in my sights
Your heart is my bullseye

Verse two

Can you believe they wanted me to marry some old knight?
I said not without a fight
I ran away to the forest of Sherwood
To win the heart of Robin Hood

Pre Chorus

I’ve got my bow, I’ve got my arrow
I’m coming for you

Chorus

I’m leaving my corset behind
Draw back and let it fly
I’ve got you in my sights
Your heart is my bullseye

Bridge

I’m gonna hunt you down (x4)

Pre Chorus

Chorus (x2)
