Mama Bird

January 30, 2017

When I was pregnant with my first child (who ended up to be a son – Asher who just turned four last week), I got together with two lovely songwriters/gentlemen from here in Edmonton – Marty Pawlina and Rob Heath – and we wrote “Words to Weigh,” a song telling my unborn little babe that they had something important to say, and to not be afraid to say it. (You can have a listen on my home page to Words to Weigh if you’d like to hear it).

Of course when the time came that I was expecting my second baby I had great plans to write a song for them as well. But along came Wren (appropriately meaning little songbird) and I hadn’t written her a song. A year passed and I still hadn’t written her a song. I’m not sure if any other songwriter/music mamas had the same problem I had, but for a while after having babies I found it hard to get a whole song out. I would get out bits and pieces, ideas, half songs, but I had a hard time finishing a song. Happily I depended on co-writing to help with this problem and have had some wonderful mama co-writes with local ladies like Colleen Rae, Chloe Albert, Katy Splane.

Just after Wren turned one last July I found myself alone with a quiet house (a rare thing these days) – my husband Jered was out fishing for the night and the kids were tucked away in bed. So I sat down with my notebook and out poured “Mama Bird.” I can’t tell you how great it felt to write a whole song by myself. It was icing that I actually quite liked the song I had written.

Last night after our weekly family dinner at my sister Brooke’s house, we put the kids to bed and put the kettle on. My incredibly talented brother in law Brent and I set up a mic in his living room and we recorded “Mama Bird” live off the floor with my family sitting around listening along. I’m excited to share this simple acoustic version of this song with you.

I wrote this song about the transformation to motherhood. How simple parts of you become something new and magical when you have a little one to care for. How you suddenly become the nurturing one and have the power to calm a crying babe with just your touch or the sound of your voice. How your words have such power and responsibility to speak light and life. But also that although you are responsible for caring, soothing and nurturing somebody else you can still take time for yourself and do the things you love, which is also such a valuable lesson to pass down to your littles.

Below are the lyrics and you can listen to “Mama Bird” here at my SoundCloud account.

I hope you enjoy the song! Love to you all!

Cheers,
LNG

Mama Bird

These wings, that were just my own
Have become so much more
Now they soothe, sway and swing

Give comfort and covering
Like they never did before

Now that I’ve become the nurturing one

Come to me oh little sparrow
Come to me without a word
I will carry all your sorrow
I will be your Mama Bird
Your Mama Bird

These words, that I used to say
Never echoed back at me
Now they speak light into little lives
Dry tears from little eyes
In the most amazing way

Now that I’ve become the nurturing one

Come to me oh little sparrow
Come to me without a word
I will carry all your sorrow
I will be your Mama Bird
Your Mama Bird

I’ll still use these wings to fly
And I’ll use these words to sing
But I keep you in my sights
For you are everything

Come to me oh little sparrow
Come to me without a word
I will carry all your sorrow
I will be your Mama Bird
Your Mama Bird
